Srebrenica and Surroundings

Map of Srebrenica and Surroundings

The area around Srebrenica has been known since antiquity for the mining of silver, lead, and zinc. The Roman municipality of Domavia was located near the village of Sase. The municipality of Malvesiatium was located on the banks of the Drina near Skelani. Ore was extracted and melted in Domavia. This municipality experienced its largest period of development in the 3rd c., when it served as an administrative mining center for the provinces of Pannonia and Dalmatia. At that time, the entire region surrounding Srebrenica was known as Argentaria. In the Middle Ages, Srebrenica was a highly developed mining and trading center. Due to its mineral resources, Srebrenica often found itself the target of invaders from the north and east.

There are 45 stećak necropolises in the municipality of Srebrenica, the most valuable of which are located at the sites of Mramorje, near the village of Bučje, and in Ljeskovik.

Prior to its destruction during the war (1992-'95), Srebrenica (2) was a quite developed area with multiple tourist attractions. The Guber mineral springs and the Guber Spa (4), Lake Perućac (1) and the Sušica Hunting Area were just some of the destinations tourists flocked to.

Today, Srebrenica is primarily known for the tragic events of July 11th, 1995. The Memorial Center in Potočari (3) bears silent witness to this tragedy. Srebrenica, and its surrounding region, has yet to recover from war casualties and destruction.
