Treskavica is surely one of the most beautiful mountains in BiH. Its name is derived from the Bosnian word "tresti se" and means to shake. This is due to frequent and minor earthquakes, as the mountain is located in a zone of very strong seismic movements. It is also known as a mountain that is rich in water, with over 300 sources and its beautiful lakes located at over 1500 m.a.s.l. The largest rivers originating on Treskavica are the Rakitnica and the Ljuta, which drain into the Neretva, the Željeznica, which flows into the Bosna, and the Bistrica, which flows into the Drina.
Mt. Treskavica is located southeast of the village of Trnovo, and northwest of the town of Kalinovik. The highest peak on Treskavica is Mala Ćaba (the Ðokinj tower), with an elevation of 2088 m.a.s.l. Although currently in the planning stages, the region of Treskavica is eventually to be joined together with the neighboring mountains of Bjelašnica, Igman, and Visočica to form a national park.
Treskavica was once full of cattle and shepherd's huts. Shepherds from Herzegovina brought their flocks of sheep to the south side of the mountain to graze, while shepherds from Bosnia made use of the north side for their oxen and horses. Today, you'll no longer see shepherds on Treskavica. If you love clean mountain air, green meadows, walking through the woods, mountain lakes with crystal clear water, and unspoiled surroundings, a visit to Mt. Treskavica is a must.
