The mountain bike trail that we have chosen for today's ride is located within the Bike Park Velež and leads from the plateau Podvelež to the village of Blagaj.
Starting point of the trip was the Motel Sunce in the village Smajkići (Podvelež), in the middle of the plateau Podvelež. After morning coffee and renting of bicycles, we drive first to a nearly located stećak necropolis (one of sixteen on the plateau) and then to an ancient Stone Cross. The Cross, surrounded by four stecak-grave stones, is located on the site where members of the ancient Church of Bosnia were meeting. Our tour guide, Asim Brkan of the Tourist Association Botin, has told us an interesting story. Once, when the residents tried to remove the cross, heavy rains have occurred in this area, causing a great flood. After the Cross was returned to the starting point, the rain stopped.
The ride then continued towards the south, on the main road to the village Kružanj. In the village we have made a little break at the local farmers and looked at the production of homemade cheese and cream.
Then followed a descent ride to the junction with the road Mostar - Nevesinje, where we had a smaller lunch at the restaurant Busak. In addition to homemade donuts we tasted excellent cheese, cream and cheese from the bag.
After lunch, we have continued our journey on the old Austria Hungarian road toward Blagaj. There is now a gravel road, which can be easily mastered on a mountain bike. During the down ride we enjoyed the view of the field Mostarsko Polje, the fortress of Herceg Stjepan and the scent of herbs and flowers from Herzegovina. On the way we met also a turtle.
When we were below the fortress, we decided to climb there. A winding path leads from the bike path up to the fortress. The fortress offers a magnificent view of Blagaj, river Buna and field Mostarsko Polje.
Our journey has ended in the village of Blagaj where we have visited the Velagić House, Dervish Tekke and the source of the river Buna That was a wonderful day. A lot of new photos and experiences that will be part of the third edition of the book "Come, Enjoy, Pass It On BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA".
